# Data & Content License — MILOai College ROI

This document covers the **data, derived computations, written
documentation, and brand assets** published at
[https://college-roi.net](https://college-roi.net). It is *not* a
license for the source code in this repository (a separate
software license may be added later; until then all rights to the
code are reserved).

We split the site's content into four buckets, each with its own
terms. Read the bucket that applies to your use case.

---

## 1. Public-source data (no MILOai claim)

The underlying raw figures come from public-sector datasets. These
were not created by MILOai and are not claimed by MILOai:

- U.S. Department of Education **College Scorecard**, including the
*Most Recent Cohorts* bundle (school identity, program-level net
price, median debt, 5-year earnings, published cost of
  attendance).
- **NCES / IPEDS** (institutional characteristics).
- **FRED** (St. Louis Fed) macro labor series.
- **Bureau of Labor Statistics** (CPS via FRED).
- **Federal Reserve Bank of New York** college labor / wage
  distribution workbook.
- **World Economic Forum**, *Future of Jobs 2025* (the raw report).

You may obtain these directly from their respective publishers
under their original terms. Where MILOai redistributes a snapshot
of public data inside this repo or via the API, that redistribution
is informational; refer to the original source for authoritative
copies and licenses.

## 2. MILOai computed per-record outputs — **CC BY 4.0**

The following are produced by MILOai's models and code, derived
from the public sources above:

- Break-even years and lifetime-cost figures returned by the ROI
calculator (per school × major × inputs).
- 20-year modeled earnings curve (ramp + growth assumptions).
- Dream-school comparison outputs ("cost of the dream").
- Macro-labor visualizations and the 4-month underemployment
  sparkline values.
- The cleaned school-name and major-name labels used for display.

These per-record outputs are released under the
**[Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)**
license, with the following clarifications:

- **Attribution required**, in the form:
  > MILOai College ROI — https://college-roi.net
  > (Scorecard release `<version>`, computed `<YYYY-MM-DD>`)
- The `scorecard_version` value is returned in every `/api/*` JSON
response. Use that exact string for the release version.
- Per-record retrieval via the public API is the supported way
to consume these outputs. Bulk mirroring is covered separately
  in §4 below.

## 3. Proprietary derived work — **all rights reserved**

The following are MILOai's original creative work and are
**not** licensed for redistribution:

- **AI-outlook categorization by major.** The mapping of each
major in our taxonomy to one of {Declining, At risk, Transitioning,
Augmented, Growing} is MILOai's interpretive read of the WEF
*Future of Jobs 2025* report. The taxonomy itself, the mapping
table, and the per-major blurb prose are © MILOai.

Disclosure of method: each blurb pairs a *factual citation* of
  a WEF ranking (e.g. "listed as #1 fastest-growing role",
"+35M jobs by 2030") with MILOai's own explanatory writing
about what the ranking means for a student choosing that major.
Specific facts and rankings are WEF's; they are cited as facts
(which are not subject to copyright under *Feist Publications
  v. Rural Telephone Service*, 499 U.S. 340). Descriptive WEF
vocabulary ("fastest-declining", "growing band", "core skill")
is used to refer to WEF's own categories. No WEF prose,
charts, tables, or ranked lists are reproduced. The WEF
report itself remains the property of the World Economic Forum.
- **The 20-year earnings model** (the specific ramp + growth
formulation, parameter choices, and calibration). The model
*outputs* are CC BY 4.0 under §2; the *model definition* is
  proprietary.
- **Methodology copy** ("Methodology (summary)" panel and any
narrative explainers on the site). Quoting up to 280 characters
with attribution is fine; reproducing in full is not.

For licensing inquiries about any of these, see §6 below.

## 4. Bulk distribution / mirroring of MILOai data

Bulk download, mirroring, or republishing the **MILOai per-record
output dataset as a standalone artifact** requires written
permission, even though the per-record outputs themselves are
CC BY 4.0. The intent is to keep MILOai as the canonical source
of record and to allow us to retire stale data when underlying
sources update.

If you need a bulk export — e.g. for academic research,
journalism, or a partner integration — contact us. We're generally
permissive for non-commercial / public-interest use with
attribution.

## 5. Trademarks and brand

**MILOai**, **MILO College ROI**, the pillar mark logo, and the
visual identity of college-roi.net are unregistered trademarks
of MILOai. Do not use the marks in a way that implies endorsement
or affiliation. Reasonable nominative use ("the MILOai College
ROI tool says X") is fine.
